What areas of the body can you treat with laser hair removal treatments?

Skin treatments such as hair removal creams or waxing can only provide short-term results in hair reduction. If you want to achieve more permanent hair reduction, laser hair removal treatment is the answer.

This laser treatment is one of the most popular procedures for men and women who suffer from excess facial hair or body hair. Our medical-grade lasers are able to treat the following areas:

  •       Bikini line
  •       Legs
  •       Arms
  •       Upper lip
  •       Chin
  •       Underarms
  •       Chest abdomen
  •       Shoulders
  •       Back

Our laser therapists can also use laser hair removal on patients who have excessive hair due to medical conditions. This includes people who suffer from beard bumps or shaving bumps, ingrown hairs or women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).

How does laser hair removal treatment work to remove unwanted hair?

Laser hair removal works by sending beams of powerful light energy into the hair follicles. The pigment within the hair follicle absorbs the light, which then turns into heat energy to heat the rest of the hair shaft.

The heat energy will either weaken the hair follicle or destroy it completely. This will prevent any further hair growth for that hair follicle.

You may still see hair growth after laser hair removal. however, this will not be from treated hair follicles, but from any new hair follicles that form. The good news is, that any new hair growth that does appear will be much finer and lighter than before.

You will need more than one session of laser hair removal to see optimal results. This is because, at any one time, your hair follicles can be in a different hair growth cycle. The best stage of the cycle to have laser treatment is the anagen phase, which is the active growth phase.

When looking for the best laser hair removal in Reading, it is important to remember that not every clinic can treat every hair type and skin colour. At The Chiltern Medical Clinic, we use the Cynosure Apogee Elite Alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers. Why? Because they are the gold standard in laser treatments and can treat most skin types and hair types.

We give every patient a patch test during their consultation to ensure that they are suitable for treatment. It will also ensure that pigment in the hair will successfully pick up the light energy from the laser.

How many treatments of laser hair removal will I need?

Every patient will respond to laser hair removal differently. Your skin colour, hair colour and hair type can impact how many treatments you will need. Your hormones, medications and tolerance of the treatment can also affect how quickly you see results.

To get optimal results, we advise having a course of 4-8 treatments of laser hair removal. You will have each treatment at least four weeks apart.

A course of treatment will also help ensure that we target as much unwanted hair as possible when it is in its growth phase.

Your laser practitioner will discuss how many treatments you will need at your consultation. They will develop a tailored laser treatment plan that will help you see permanent hair reduction.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most patients describe laser hair removal as being much more comfortable than shaving, waxing or electrolysis. However, you can feel mild discomfort when the laser hits your skin. Many people describe this as an elastic band snapping on your skin. This is momentary and goes away when the laser leaves your skin.

You may also feel a slight heat sensation on your skin. To remove the heat from the

surface of the skin, we use a cooling device that blows cold air over the treatment

area. This will make your treatment more comfortable.
