Skin peels are the fastest growing non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the US and are increasingly popular in the UK. They work by removing the surface layers of your skin to reveal the healthy layers underneath.
Skin peels are effective for treating the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, mild scarring, certain types of acne, age spots and hyperpigmentation, as well as improving the look and feel of your skin.

A range of skin peel strengths is available to ensure you get the best peel for your individual case. We can discuss the various peels with you and what you can expect from your treatment when you visit us for a free initial consultation.

Skin Peels Frequently Asked Questions

Skin peels – sometimes referred to as ‘chemical peels’ – use a chemical solution to remove dead skin cells and surface layers of skin, which may have visible imperfections, to allow newer, healthier skin cells to surface. These peels quite literally peel away imperfections, improving their appearance or even removing them altogether.

A range of different skin peel formulations is available, depending on your particular skin type. We will be able to recommend the right one for you during your initial consultation.

At the Chiltern Medical Clinics, we use the following peels:

  • Glycolic Peel
  • TCA Peel
  • Easy Phytic Peel
  • ZO Red Carpet Peel

Glycolic Peel

The Glycolic Peel is generally considered to be one of the mildest and most gentle skin peels because it is made from alpha-hydroxy acid, which naturally occurs in sugar cane. It is particularly effective at removing dry, rough or scaly skin. The Glycolic Peel also contains lactic acid, which is excellent for resurfacing the skin and increasing its moisture levels. Glycolic peels are typically used to treat mild sun damage, pigmentation and loss of elasticity. The peel can be applied in different concentrations, depending on the desired result and your skin’s response.

TCA Peel

TCA peels – trichloroacetic acid peels – are medium strength skin peels that rejuvenate and repair the skin. We would typically use this peel to improve skin discolouration, reduce fine lines and even out your skin texture. A TCA peel usually requires about a week of downtime, although the results are more noticeable than those of the milder Glycolic peel.

TCA Peels work deeper in the skin than Glycolic peels but, again, can be administered using different concentrations, depending on your individual needs.

TCA is currently the only chemical peel that has been approved by the FDA to treat Actinic Keratosis (pre-cancer).

Easy Phytic Peel

The ideal lunch-time ‘pick me up’ skin peel.

This is a superficial strength peel, which means that it only takes the surface layer of skin away. This peel promotes a slow release of the medication for continuous penetration of the skin and works as an exfoliation technique, promoting stimulation of healthy skin without the obvious signs of exfoliation. This is ideal if you like the idea of a skin peel but you’re not sure you’re ready for one.
The peel acts as a deep exfoliate eliminating the surface layer of skin that has been damaged by many different factors such as sun exposure, wind, pollution or smoking.

Acne is an ever-growing problem with fatty foods and sugary drinks being the main catalyst. This peel is ideal for tackling the problem of acne that normal face washes and cleansing regimes cannot deal with. The peel is especially popular for teenage acne. As the peel only takes the top layer of skin away, it unblocks the skin that is affected by acne and effectively helps the acne to improve.

ZO Red Carpet Peel

The RED CARPET PEEL is named after the number of celebrity’s that use this peel at Dr Zein Obagi’s head office in LA prior to going to their red carpet events! The RED CARPET PEEL contains 3 different acids to exfoliate your skin, promote cell turnover and therefore skin rejuvenation. It contains 10% Salicylic Acid, 10% Lactic Acid and 10% Citric Acid. 3-4 peels are recommended to achieve maximum benefits. These treatments can be carried out at 2 weeks intervals. It takes about 30 minutes for your treatment. There is no downtime.

The price of your treatment will depend on the type of peel you need and the area to be treated. We will discuss this with you during your consultation, as well as answering any other questions you have about skin peels or alternative treatments.
